Wawel Castle sits right along the Vistula River in Krakow, Poland. The Castle is built upon Wawel Hill – a huge limestone rock – and is thought to have been settled as early as the seventh century. The Wawel Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral situated within the Castle walls. This is where the priest Karol Wojtyla served before becoming Pope John Paul II. The different architecture styles are built together but remain fairly separate in appearance.  My favorite part was that the drain pipes were sculpted into dragon heads.

The Dragon’s Den is a cave that is formed within the limestone. I climbed down through a circular staircase and then walked through the cave. When I exited, I was on Vistula Boulevard where I stood in front of a sculpture of the Wawel Dragon created by Bronisław Chromy in 1972.
