Do I Need a Wedding Website?

Wedding Website

I’ll admit it: I’m a fanatic for an adorable wedding website. I enjoy reading the “how we met” story and the ability to include many, many more photos than are included on the save the dates or invitations. You can see my save the dates here.

What information should I include?

You should include the basics! A website can be shared at any time. If you’re late on sending save the dates or invitations, a website is an alternative method to share your pertinent details for your special day.

  • Who you are: Have you ever gone to a wedding, but never met either the bride or groom? Informing your guests how you two met is the perfect introduction for friends coming with dates. Since I’ve moved, I might not get the chance to meet good friend’s new partners before
  • Date: What date do your guests need to plan for? The save the dates also check this box, but if you’re skipping on the save the dates, then make sure that you announce the date of your event as quickly as possible!
  • Location: Do you have guests coming from out of town? Let guests know where the event will take place ahead of time. It will be much easier for them to find and price transportation. Also, include hotel information if you have decided to block off rooms.
  • RSVP: Some guests might lose your invites – but it’s okay! You already included the digital RSVP on your website. Some people find it easier to use the automation software included for determining how many guests will be attending your wedding. The alternative is to use a spreadsheet on your own or keep track via pen and paper.
  • Registry: As it is not proper etiquette to include registry information on the invitation, it is an easy additional part of a wedding website.

Should I buy a domain?

No! You don’t have to buy a domain to have your very own little corner of the internet devoted to your wedding. You can use The Knot to create your free wedding website.

If you did want to buy, then you can check out Squarespace for very EASY method of creating your own website. Prices may vary, but you do get a free 30-day trial.

Do I need a wedding website?

No! It is not required that you have a wedding website while you are planning EVERY other aspect of your wedding. It is meant to be supplemental to include extra information for guests as well as helpful for you while you are planning. If you don’t want one, don’t get one!

Did you create a wedding website? How did you decide to make one?

XOXO,
Katie

  1. I’ve seen a few of these pop up in recent years, and I (personally!) love getting to know BOTH parties in this way. Also it’s useful for event information. and whatnot. PLUS having all info in one spot (including registry) makes it a bit easier to take care of scoping out the couple AND purchasing something for them to start their life together 🙂

  3. We used an app and invited our guests to upload photos, stories and gave updates via that. I don’t know that many people used it, but it was a cool idea.

    1. I went to a wedding in Mexico and the couple used WedPics (I think) and it was just for photos. It was easy to upload and then the bride can scroll through and pick her favorites from her friends.

  6. I think it is a great way of documenting a couples special day, although wedding websites are a lot of work. I think it is up to a couples personal preference to be fair x

  7. I am so glad this wasn’t an issue way back when I got married, I was at my hairdressers recently and she was working on her hashtag name to use for her wedding?!?!?!

  12. I think a Wedding Website is such a great idea. Especially if you have family members that live at a great distance, or even out of the country. I like that idea, but well, I have been married for 25 years, so this is really not something I would be looking into. My kids maybe one day? Awesome idea, blessings!

  13. Wedding website sounds like a nice idea for documenting everything. Though it depends upon the personal choice of the couple as how much they are comfortable to share their personal lives in the world of internet!

  16. I never thought that it was a trend to build a wedding website. I guess it can help in organising the menus and knowing exactly how many guests will come, at what hours and what are their preferences.

  20. A wedding website never occurred to me, but then again I eloped to Gibraltar and barely had a reception back home! I wanted the wedding to be just for us and I’m glad we kept it private. For me, it feels more intimate that way, but to each their own.

  21. I think it is a mini blog and as a blogger I cannot fault people for using them. I love reading peoples stories on how they met. Makes me think of my husband and I. I also think it helps to figure out what to get for their gifts

  24. I think wedding websites are cute. I think they are necessary for people to get to know the story, the bridal party and info for guest who are coming from out of town. i cant wait until i get married one day I will be making a site for my big day!

  25. I’ve had a few friends who created wedding websites and they were done really well. This certainly is a rather new thing and not at all mandatory. I figure if the couple really want one they should go for it. It’s their celebration.

  26. My daughter created a wedding website and it was so beautiful and useful. I wasn’t sure if she would keep it going but she did. She now shares it with her friends and co workers. Many of them have used her idea to create their own website also. I think if that is what they wish to do….go for it!

  30. I’ve seen a few of these sites show up and I think it’s kind of cool. I think it’s a really neat way to document your story and share it with those who matter to you.

  31. I actually didn’t know it was a thing, however, I could totally see why I would want to do it. We didn’t really have a big wedding and our expenses were very minimal. I do love how beautiful your site is. It is a great way to tell your story – and a beautiful memory

  34. I love wedding websites! My cousin is getting married this October. Their site is so fun and I actually never seen one until she put her’s together. It tells their entire love story of which I had no clue about so it was definitely fun to go through. Also, all the events (out of town wedding) are in there. We get to share on their experiences planning the wedding with them and their wedding party.

  36. I’ve actually seen a few of my friends with wedding websites and they turn out just beautifully. Of course when you’re planning a wedding the last thing you need is to have to worry about this but it’s a great keepsake, not to mention something memorable for all your guests as well. Weddings can be so much fun and sometimes too fun. So it’s always great to go back and check out all the lovely parts of it that were missed.

  37. Some people skimp on having an online website but I think it’s a very vital feature for couples especially with this digital age! Your tips here are also very helpful. I hope more people will get to see this!
