Art in 2020

In the beginning of quarantine in April 2020, I started to look for new projects to work on. Since I was working from home, I had more time to think about what I wanted out of my home office space.

The first project was to make my office a little more interesting without having to worry about my apartment lease. I decided on this DIY of electrical tape arrows. You can read more about my home office tour here.

I also ended up trying out acrylic pours. I was transfixed on watching videos about this style. I bought these tiny little canvas to test out the color mixes, the consistency and different mix ins.

The tiny trials prepared me to do one large canvas. I chose white with blues swirled. I have it hanging in the bedroom.

After I took a trip home to Wisconsin over Labor Day weekend, I then finally pushed myself to start the watercolors that had been on my list. Zack and I had vacationed in Italy in May 2019. I had all these photos that I wanted to sketch out and just never seemed to get around to. I only ended up working on three, but I think they’re cute.

Then, as I was interested in acrylic pours, I found out about resin pours. This one took me a little longer to get the hang of. I definitely need to have a better space in order to work on these because I needed proper ventilation that I didn’t have in an apartment. I used the garage, but the time it needed to dry didn’t allow me to have the proper space. I ruined a folding table and it was really messy. Lots of trial and error with these. I hot glued the stones to a wood canvas, then mixed the resin with pigments of color. To help with the swirls, I bought a heat gun, but that caused a lot of fumes and I’m sure that I gave myself on brain damage. Again, I need better ventilation in order to try this again.

Towards the end of 2020, I focused on some DIY door mat projects for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. One doormat for each holiday month. I bought DIY Outdoor Paint by ArtMinds from Michaels, four Trampa Door Mats from Ikea, and freezer paper to sketch out the design for the cats. The freezer paper didn’t really work for holding the template in place. For the Thanksgiving and Christmas mat, I free-handed the entire design. The fourth mat is red and white stripes, but I never took a photo of it.

Sometimes it doesn’t always seem like I accomplish much on a week-by-week basis. But, when I create a full post of all the photos on my phone, I can visually see that I put in a lot of effort throughout the entire year.

XOXO,
Katie
